I have heard things said of you which would give any woman pause, and I would hear whether there is any truth in these accusations before further considering your proposal. Darcy could only wonder what it was he had been accused of in this corner of the country where he was entirely unknown but for his past two months’ residency. He nodded his assent for Elizabeth to continue, little imagining what a blow she was about to deal him.
